PRODUCT FAQ
How do I look after my solid gold and diamond jewellery?
Proper care and maintenance of jewellery can help ensure its longevity, retain its appearance, and prevent damage. Here are some tips on how to look after your jewelry:
1. Storage:
- Store each piece of jewelry separately to prevent scratching and tangling. Consider using individual pouches, jewelry boxes, or compartments with soft lining.
2. Cleaning:
- Regularly clean your jewelry to remove dirt, oils, and debris that can accumulate over time.
- Use a soft, non-abrasive cloth to gently wipe the jewellery's surfaces.
- For more thorough cleaning, use a mild soap and lukewarm water. Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage certain gemstones or metals.
3. Handling:
- Handle your jewelry with clean hands to avoid transferring oils and dirt onto the pieces.
- Put on your jewelry after applying makeup, perfumes, and lotions to prevent chemicals from coming into direct contact with the jewellery, which could cause damage or discoloration.
4. Removing Jewellery:
- Remove jewellery before engaging in activities that could expose it to chemicals, harsh detergents, or physical impact, such as household cleaning, gardening, or sports.
- It is best to take off jewelry before taking off clothing, going to bed, showering, swimming, or bathing.
Solid Gold vs Gold Vermeil/Plating ?
Solid gold and gold-plated items have different characteristics and qualities, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Whether one is "better" than the other depends on your priorities, budget, and intended use. Here are some factors to consider:
1. Value and Investment:
- Solid Gold: Solid gold items are made entirely of gold, which holds intrinsic value due to its precious metal status. They can be valuable investments and retain their value over time.
- Gold-Plated: Gold-plated items have a thin layer of gold electroplated onto a base metal/silver. They don't hold as much intrinsic value as solid gold and are not considered valuable investments.
2. Durability:
- Solid Gold: Solid gold is more durable and resistant to tarnishing, as gold is a non-reactive metal. It can withstand everyday wear and tear without losing its shine or color.
- Gold-Plated: Gold-plated items have a limited lifespan as the thin layer of gold can wear off over time, revealing the base metal underneath. They are more susceptible to tarnishing and may require more careful handling and maintenance.
3. Aesthetics:
- Solid Gold: Solid gold items have a consistent color and appearance throughout because they are made entirely of gold.
- Gold-Plated: Gold-plated items might show variations in color and appearance as the plating wears off and the base metal is exposed.
4. Allergies and Sensitivities:
- Solid Gold: Solid gold is hypoallergenic and unlikely to cause allergic reactions or skin sensitivities.
- Gold-Plated: Some people may develop allergic reactions or skin sensitivities when the plating wears off and the base metal comes into contact with the skin.
Lab Grown Diamonds vs Natural Diamonds?
Mined diamonds and lab-grown diamonds share many similarities in terms of their physical and chemical properties, but they are produced through different processes and have distinct environmental and ethical considerations. Here are the key differences between the two:
1. Origin and Formation:
- Mined Diamonds: Mined diamonds are formed naturally deep within the Earth's mantle over millions of years through high pressure and high temperature conditions. They are then brought to the surface through volcanic eruptions. The formation of natural diamonds takes millions of years.
- Lab-Grown Diamonds: Lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled laboratory environments that mimic the conditions under which natural diamonds are formed. These diamonds are grown using advanced technological processes, such as chemical vapor deposition (CVD) or high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) methods. Lab-grown diamonds can be produced in a matter of weeks to a few months, depending on the growth method used.
2. Environmental Impact:
- Mined Diamonds: The mining of natural diamonds can have significant environmental consequences, including habitat disruption, soil erosion, water pollution, and energy consumption.
- Lab-Grown Diamonds: The environmental impact of lab-grown diamonds is generally considered to be lower, as the process involves less land disruption and fewer carbon emissions. However, energy consumption during the diamond-growing process is still a consideration.
3. Ethical Concerns:
- Mined Diamonds: The mining industry has faced ethical concerns related to labor practices, human rights violations, and the potential for conflict diamonds (diamonds mined in war zones and sold to finance armed conflict against governments).
- Lab-Grown Diamonds: Lab-grown diamonds are often considered an ethical alternative since they are not associated with these concerns connected to mining. However, ethical considerations can still vary based on the specific practices of individual companies.
4. Rarity and Value:
- Mined Diamonds: Mined diamonds are rare and carry a certain value due to their natural origin and the geological processes involved in their formation.
- Lab-Grown Diamonds: Lab-grown diamonds are more abundant and typically cost less than their mined counterparts of comparable quality. They provide an excellent budget conscious alternative to mined diamonds.
5. Physical and Chemical Properties:
- Both mined and lab-grown diamonds have identical physical and chemical properties, including hardness, brilliance, and chemical composition (carbon).
